About the Industrial Technology Department and Manufacturing production Technology Academy- MPTA

The MPTA is an identifiable, integral, and continuing component of a quality, comprehensive system of education.  The Industrial Technology Academy enriches and utilizes other curricular areas such as English, mathematics, science, and the arts. This is illustrated through each core academic study that promotes the MPTA ideology in its' curriculum. These individual disciplines bring theory and practice closer together through illustrations and practical examples which are industrial in nature.  Industrial Technology through the MPTA helps young people discover and develop personal aptitudes, interests, abilities, self-reliance, judgment and resourcefulness through problem-solving and self--expression in an industrial environment.

MPTA Core Curriculum
With the academy, students take a demanding sequence of courses that aligns with EGUSD and LCHS graduation requirements and CSUS/UC college entrance requirements.

In addition to our CTE curriculum and other non-CTE courses, MPTA students take the following classes:
9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade
MPTA English 9 MPTA English 10 MPTA English 11 MPTA English 12
MPTA Math 1 MPTA Math 2 MPTA Math 3 MPTA Math 4
MPTA General Science MPTA Biology MPTA Physics
MPTA World Geography   MPTA US History
MPTA Advocacy 9 MPTA Advocacy 9 MPTA Advocacy 9 MPTA Advocacy 9

A challenging academic component prepares students for success— without remediation— in California’s community colleges and universities, as well as in apprenticeships and other postsecondary programs. Academics relate to the industry theme when possible and include:

English—four years
Mathematics—including algebra, geometry, and advanced algebra or statistics
Science—two years including biology, chemistry, or physics
Social Studies—three years including American and world history, U.S. government and economics
Foreign language—two years emphasizing oral communication and cross–cultural understanding
Visual and performing arts—one year
MPTA Career Technical Education Components
MPTA Career Technical Education courses are organized around major industry sectors; Engineering and Architecture or Advanced Manufacturing and contain courses within specific pathways.  Our CTE courses utilize interdisciplinary projects from our Core classes.  Our demanding technical component delivers concrete knowledge and skills through a pathway of three or more technical courses. There are two pathways within MPTA that students may complete.  The focus is on preparing youth for high–skill, high–wage employment through an emphasis on real–world applications that bring academic and technical learning to life.

Engineering and Architecture Sector - Engineering Design Pathway
Drafting A/B

Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) 11
CADD11 aligns with course ENGR6 at Sacramento State University.  Students attaining a B or better in CADD11 may apply for 3 semester credits for ENGR6 at CSUS for a nominal registration fee through the Accelerated College Enrollment program.
Passing CADD11 satisfies the EGUSD Computer Technology graduation requirement.
CADD11 satisfies the LCHS Senior-math graduation requirement when taken and passed during the Senior year.
Advanced Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) 12
Advanced CADD12 aligns with course ENGR7 at Sacramento State University.  Students attaining a B or better in Advanced CADD12 may apply for 3 semester credits for ENGR7 at CSUS for a nominal registration fee through the Accelerated College Enrollment program.
Advanced CADD12 satisfies the LCHS Senior-math graduation requirement when taken and passed during the Senior year.

Advanced Manufacturing Sector - Product Development and Design Pathway
Principles of Engineering A

Principles of Engineering B

Design and Implementation 11
This Junior-year course has several components.
Students explore potential career choices and find a mentor which they will shadow for one day throughout the year.  Students then present to their class about what they learned from this experience.
Students choose a community-service based project in which they meet with a staff member from LCHS to design, build, and deliver a product for the staff members' class or program.  Each project is required to use technologies such as the 3D Printer, CNC Router, and/or the CNC Plasma Cutter.
Students then design, plan, and build a small project for themselves made out of wood or metal.  Again, projects are required to use technologies such as the 3D Printer, CNC Router, and/or the CNC Plasma Cutter.
D&I11 is an a-g approved elective course and also satisfies LCHS's computer technology graduation requirement.
Design and Manufacturing 12
This Senior-year course is our Advanced Manufacturing capstone course.  Students utilize the skills they have gained in previous CTE courses to design, plan, and build projects of their choosing.  All projects are required to use technologies such as the 3D Printer, CNC Router, and/or the CNC Plasma Cutter.
D&M 12 aligns with course ME37 at Sacramento State University.  Students attaining a B or better in D&M 12 may apply for 3 semester credits for ME37 at CSUS for a nominal registration fee through the Accelerated College Enrollment program.
